Dr Yvonne Stokes, 2007 J.H. Michell medallist
School of Mathematical Sciences
University of Adelaide

Yvonne Stokes is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Adelaide. She obtained a B.Sc. from Murdoch University, followed by an Honours Degree in Applied Mathematics at the University of Adelaide where she then undertook her PhD in Applied Mathematics under the supervision of Prof. Ernie Tuck, FAA, FTSE. Her PhD research was supported by SOLA International under the ARC Strategic Partnership with Industry Research Training (SPIRT) scheme and was on the flow of highly viscous fluids, in particular the gravity sagging of molten glass in the manufacture of moulds for casting plastic ophthalmic lenses.

On completing her PhD Yvonne joined the School of Applied Mathematics at the University of Adelaide, where she has worked to the present time. Her first position was that of Assistant Lecturer. From 2000-2002 she held an ARC Postdoctoral Fellowship for research on flow in spirally wound channels, which she relinquished in 2002 to take up a tenure-track Lecturership. She was promoted to Senior Lecturer at the beginning of 2005.

Yvonne enjoys applying mathematics to real-world problems. Her main research interests are in the areas of fluid mechanics and industrial mathematics. In recent times she has become interested in mathematics in medicine through research with colleagues in the Reproductive Health Unit at the University of Adelaide aimed at improving in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) techniques.
