Funding possibilities for postgraduate students
|
|
All Australian students wishing to pursue a higher degree in Mathematics or Statistics at the University of Sydney should apply for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA). The closing date for applications is usually around the end of October; application forms are obtained from the Research and Scholarships Office.
These scholarships, which are funded by the Australian government,
are also available to permanent residents of Australia and citizens of New Zealand. Further information about APA's can be found here.
The University of Sydney also offers University Postgraduate Awards (UPA's), which are similar to APA's.

Additional funding for APA and UPA holders
|
|
The School of Mathematics and Statistics will offer up
to five "top up" awards to APA or UPA holders who commence their candidature in 2003. The supplementation is valued at $5,000 per annum for three years. The basis of the award will be academic merit.
Successful scholarship holders will be automatically eligible for
these awards — there is no need to apply.
Note that postgraduate students within the School of Mathematics and
Statistics are also able to obtain additional funding by undertaking tutoring
and marking in the School.

International students
|
|
International students who wish to enter our PhD or MSc programs may
apply for an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship
(IPRS). These scholarships are funded by the Australian government, and
cover tuition fees for three years for a PhD degree, or two years
for an MSc. The University of Sydney awards an International
Postgraduate Award (IPA) to IPRS holders; this provides a living
allowance to the value of approximately $17,600 per annum.
There is also an International Mathematics & Statistics Postgraduate
Research Scholarship (IMSPRS) funded by the School of Mathematics
and Statistics, providing similar benefits to the IPRS plus IPA. No
separate application for the IMSPRS is necessary – all
applicants for the IPRS in the area of Mathematics & Statistics will
automatically be considered for an IMSPRS.
For more information, see the
IPRS web page and the
international scholarships page on the University's
International Office web site.
