The School of Mathematics and Statistics offers a postgraduate diploma referred
to as the Graduate Diploma in Science. It is available to students
who wish to upgrade a three year Pass degree to an equivalent Honours
degree, and those students whose qualifications (especially with respect
to research potential) are not well established.
The diploma replaces the older course known as MSc (Qualifying). The
Graduate Diploma in Science course utilises the
School's fourth year Honours programs, but can be taken
either part-time over two years or full-time over one year. Students are
ranked along with the Honours year class in order to gauge research potential
and successful candidates
are eligible to apply for a research scholarship. The fourth year Honours
program consists of seven courses assessed by
written examinations and an essay/project worth 30% of the total
assessment. The essay/project need not contain original work.
