MaPSS: Mathematical Postgraduate Seminar Series: Timothy Bywaters -- An introduction to scale theory for totally disconnected locally compact groups

Dear All,

We are delighted to present the MaPSS Seminar topic of Monday 22/08; please see the
abstract below.

**This Semester the Seminar will always run on Monday, at 5:00pm in 535A**

Following the talk, there will be pizza on offer.

Speaker: Timothy Bywaters (Sydney University)

Title: An introduction to scale theory for totally disconnected locally compact groups.

Abstract: In the early 90’s Willis jumpstarted the study of totally disconnected locally
compact (tdlc) groups with the introduction of the scale function and tidy subgroups.
With the help of the automorphism group of a regular tree, we will see the definitions
of these concepts and see how they can be used to gain insight into geometry of tdlc
groups.

Supervisors, please encourage your students to attend.

Thanks,
MaPSS Organizers
