Early last year Joost was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue. An initial operation was thought be be successful, unfortunately, the cancer soon reappeared and metastasized, spreading throughout his body. Joost and his wife Jaqueline made a big effort to make as much good out of their circumstances as possible. Towards the end, when Joost was weak of body but still clear of mind, he had accepted his fate and was at peace with it.
Joost held a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the School for 2000-2004 before before being appointed as a Professor of Mathematics at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He was a very talented mathematician with a particular interest in varieties over non-algebraically closed fields. Many will remember Joost for his keen mathematical acumen, his sense of humour and his bright and cheerful disposition. It is a sad and tragic loss.
