Applied Maths Seminar: Chawla -- Protein Secondary Structure Prediction with Conditional Random Fields

APPLIED MATHEMATICS SEMINAR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY

Speaker: Assoc/Prof Sanjay Chawla,
School of Information Technologies, University of Sydney

Title: Protein Secondary Structure Prediction with Conditional Random Fields

DATE: Wednesday, June 6
TIME: 2:00pm
LOCATION: University of Sydney, Eastern Avenue Lecture Theatre (Level 1)

Abstract:

Conditional Random Fields (CRFs) are a generalization of logistic regression for
classifying sequential data. In this talk we will demonstrate the use of CRFs to
predict the secondary structure of integral membrane proteins. Compared to other
discriminative classifiers, CRFs overcome the label-bias problem and also allow for a
seamless integration of biological domain knowledge into the model. This is joint work
with Lior Lukov and Brett Church.
