SUMS: Tillmann -- Three Angles on Tropical Geometry

This week we’re lucky to have Stephan Tillmann giving the Thursday SUMS talk.

Abstract:
The field of tropical geometry is considered to be an infant,
even though its origins trace back to Newton. I’ll start with Newton’s work
on polynomials, then describe Bergman’s breakthrough results using tropical
geometry to answer questions in group theory, and end with the study of
degenerations of geometric structures on surfaces.
