A homological interpretation of Schur elements

Friday 12th March, 12:05-12:55pm, Carslaw 373.

We start from a fairly general setup - which for example applies to the generic Iwahori-Hecke algebras associated to finite Coxeter groups. In this talk we derive in a purely ring-theoretical way a homological characterization of the well-known Schur elements, which are usually associated to the irreducible representations of such an algebra. The Schur elements will arise in this context as the generators of ideals which are intersections of annihilators of certain extension groups. If time allows, we will also show how to compute another important homological invariant of generic Iwahori-Hecke algebras; namely, the Higman ideal.
