Connected sums and splitting of PD3-pairs

There are two distinct notions of connected sum for PD3-pairs reflecting the situation of manifolds with boundary. We discuss recent developments concerning the connection between the splitting of the fundamental group of a PD3-pair (X, ðX) as free product and the decomposition of (X, ðX) as interior or boundary connected sum of two PD3-pairs.
