Algebra Seminar

Given a simple complex Lie algebra L we give a direct construction for the fundamental representation of smallest degree. For types A, B, C and D this provides a uniform means of identifying the Chevalley groups of L with the corresponding classical groups. For types F and G it leads to the construction of the (well-known) algebras on which the groups act.
