Among the reductions of the resonant three-wave interaction system to six-dimensional differential systems, one of them has been mentioned by Kitaev to be linked to the generic sixth Painleve equation. We give this link explicitly, and this provides in addition a new Lax pair for $\PVI$, without any restriction of the monodromy exponents.
