We present a method of reduction of order for systems of ordinary differential equations having a certain structure. Our method relies on establishing a Backlund transformation between an integrated modified system (via a Miura map) and an integrated version of the system under consideration. We illustrate our approach with several examples and show how ideas which are more familiar within the context of completely integrable partial differential equations can be applied in order to reduce the order of ordinary differential equations having a certain structure, whether these last be integrable or not.
