Abstract

The purpose of this note is to give an insertion scheme proof of the formula, which expresses the power sum symmetric functions in terms of the basis of Schur functions via the irreducible characters of the symmetric group. The proof of this formula will be by direct application of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth insertion scheme and a recent formula of Roichman. A similar proof is also given for the formula which describes the irreducible characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of type A in terms of symmetric functions.
