Degree Core in Maths

The University of Sydney recognises how important mathematics is across Science and Engineering, and so includes a compulsory degree core of 12 credit points. It caters for thousands of students with differing mathematical ability, interest and backgrounds.


Choose your Degree core (Science)

In 2018 there are 2 main versions of the Mathematics Core:

  • 12 credit points of mathematics including the 3 credit point unit “Statistical Thinking with Data” (MATH1005/MATH1905)*.
Statistics Linear Algebra Calculus
MATH1005 or MATH1905 MATH1002 or MATH1014 or MATH1902 (MATH1021 and MATH1023) or (MATH1011 and MATH1013) or (MATH1921 and MATH1923)
  • 12 credit points of mathematics including the 6 credit point unit “Foundations of Data Science” (DATA1001).
Data Science Linear Algebra Calculus
DATA1001 MATH1002 or MATH1014 MATH1021 or MATH1023 or MATH1011 or MATH1013 or MATH1921 or MATH1923


*Note: In 2018, “Biostatistics” (MATH1015) will also be offered for the last time in Semester 1. It covers the same material as MATH1005.


Degree core (Engineering)

Engineering students do 12 credit points of mathematics including the 3 credit point unit “Statistical Thinking with Data”.


Which subjects should I choose?

I have completed NSW HSC Extension 2 or equivalent

  • You are eligible to take our Advanced courses indicated by 19xx.
Decision Subjects to take
1. Intend to major in Mathematics, Statistics, Financial Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology MATH1921, MATH1902, MATH1923, MATH1905
2. Are required to take DATA1001 MATH1921, MATH1902 and DATA1001
3. Want to take Data Science units as well as majoring in Mathematics, Statistics or Financial Mathematics MATH1921, MATH1902, and DATA1001.
Note: You must also enrol in MATH1923 and MATH1904 after you have completed enrolment in the Science degree core.
  • Otherwise, you can choose either of the above patterns of enrolment, but the selection that keeps most options open is MATH1921, MATH1902, MATH1923 and MATH1905.


I have completed NSW HSC Extension 1 or equivalent

  • You are eligible to take our Mainstream courses indicated by 10xx.
Decision Subjects to take
1. Intend to major in Mathematics, Statistics, Financial Mathematics and Statistics, Physics or Nanoscience and Nanotechnology MATH1021, MATH1002, MATH1023, MATH1005
2. Are required to take DATA1001 MATH1021, MATH1002 and DATA1001
3. Intend to major in both Mathematics and Data Science MATH1021, MATH1002 and DATA1001.
Note: You must also enroll in MATH1023 and MATH1004, later, after you have completed enrolment in the Mathematics core.
  • Otherwise, you can choose any of the above patterns of enrolment.

  • Suggestions:

Decision Subjects you may want to take
If you intend to major in Chemistry MATH1021, MATH1002, MATH1023 and MATH1005
If you intend to major in data-driven life sciences MATH1021, MATH1002 and DATA1001


I have completed NSW HSC 2 unit Mathematics or equivalent

  • You are eligible to take our Fundamental courses indicated by 101x.
Decision Subjects to take
1.Intend to major in Statistics, Physics or Nanoscience and Nanotechnology MATH1011, MATH1015, MATH1013, MATH1014
2. Are required to take DATA1001 (MATH1011 or MATH1013), MATH1014 and DATA1001
  • Otherwise, you can choose either of the above patterns of enrolment.

  • Please note that MATH1011, MATH1013 and MATH1014 do not normally allow students to go on to majors in Mathematics or in Financial Mathematics and Statistics.


I have not completed at least NSW HSC 2 unit Mathematics or equivalent:

  • Take MATH1111 (you will need to get departmental permission to enroll) and MATH1014 and MATH1005.
