Alternative Windows Access (to rome)

 

The main aim here is to tell you:

(1)   how to log on to Windows;

(2)   how then to log on to the computer called 'rome'

(3)   how to transfer files to and from a memory stick to and from your home directory.

 

(1)  Logging on to Windows
 

(a)    The initial screen may take various forms, the usual ones being described below.

(i)        You may need to press [Ctrl][Alt][Delete]. On doing so, you will see a login panel for a username and password, as well as a "log on to" menu. Select ROMEGROUP in the "log on to" menu. Proceed as in (c) below.

(ii)      You may simply see a "Welcome to rome" login panel, prompting you for a username and password. Try selecting 'Disconnect' in 'Options'. Proceed as in (i) above.

(iii)    If your screen differs from those in (i) and (ii) above, then either seek help from your tutor or try selecting 'Disconnect' in 'Options'. Then proceed as in (i) above.

(c)    Enter your username and password as indicated below:

Please enter your user name:  Your username is the same as your UniKey login name. At the rome login prompt just type your username in lower case and press [RETURN].

Please enter your password:  Type your UniKey password and press [RETURN].

 

After logging on correctly, you will see a Windows desktop on your screen.

 

 

(2)  Logging on to Rome

Double click the X icon labelled xrome at the left side of the desktop. A login window to rome should open. Proceed to logon to rome using your UniKey login name and password. You can toggle between the Windows desktop and the rome window by clicking the rome icon at the bottom of the screen.

 

 

(3)  Transferring Files with a Memory Stick

Plug in your memory stick at the front of the computer CPU. Double click the My Computer icon on the desktop. Open your memory stick directory and your home directory H:\ on rome by double clicking their icons in the My Computer window. Drag and drop files between the windows. To disconnect your memory stick click on the green left arrow at the bottom right of the desktop.

 

(4)  Logging off

To log-off at the end of a session, log-off from rome and then windows in the start menu at the bottom left of the screen.
