GETTING STARTED (mess and fortuts on rome)

The main aims here are to tell you:-

(1)    how to log on to the computer called 'rome';

(2)    how to get course messages on the computer;

(3)    how to start the tutorials for this course;

(4)    how to log off.

Please proceed through the steps below. First logins are often problematic. So don't hesitate to ask the tutor for help.

(1)  Logging on to rome

(a)    Find the [Caps Lock], [Scroll Lock] and [Num Lock] keys on your keyboard. Pressing each of these keys will toggle on and off a small light, either on the key or elsewhere. Make sure all these lights are off, otherwise the login process may not complete successfully.

(b)    The initial screen may take various forms, the usual ones being described below.

(i)        You may need to press [Ctrl][Alt][Delete]. On doing so, you will see a login panel for a username and password, as well as a "log on to" menu. Enter the username rome and the password rome. Select ROMEGROUP in the "log on to" menu. You should then see a message "Welcome to rome" and a second login panel, prompting you for username and password. Proceed as in (c) below.

(ii)       You may simply see a "Welcome to rome" login panel, prompting you for a username and password. Proceed as in (c) below.

(iii)     If your screen differs from those in (i) and (ii) above, then either seek help from your tutor or try selecting 'Disconnect' in 'Options'. Then proceed as in (i) or (ii) above.

(c)    Enter your username and password as indicated below:

Please enter your user name:  Your username is the same as your UniKey login name. At the rome login prompt just type your username in lower case and press [RETURN].

Please enter your password:  Type your UniKey password and press [RETURN].

(2)  Course Messages

After logging on correctly, either (a) or (b) will occur, as described below:

(a) You will see various windows on your screen including:

(i) A 'Session Console' window which shows system messages and which may be ignored or dismissed for the moment. (ii) A 'Session Manager' window containing pop-up menus that may be selected by left-clicking. You will use some of these later, but you may ignore them for the moment. (iii) An 'Xterm' window, showing your username followed by a % prompt at which you may later enter UNIX operating system commands. If advised by a dialogue box that you have unread course messages, then read them. Note that you may also read course messages at any time by left-clicking to select an Xterm window, then entering the command

mess

in lower case after the UNIX % prompt in that window. Course messages carry important information such as weekly schedules, hints and corrections to exercises, due dates for assignments etc. In particular the course messages will show the schedule for week 2 (of semester) and following weeks. Please read the Week 2 schedule before proceeding.

(b) You will see a course selection window. Select MATH3076 or MATH3976, then proceed as in (a).

(3)  Tutorials

To start the Fortran tutorials simply enter the command

fortuts   &

at the Unix % prompt in an Xterm window or select 'Fortran Tutorials' from the 'Applications' menu in the 'Session Manager' window, and follow the schedule and other instructions in the course messages.

(4)  Logging off

You should log-off at the end of a session, otherwise the next person who uses your computer may access and possibly corrupt your files. To log-off, follow the steps below:-

(a)    Use the mouse to select 'Logout' from the 'Session Manager' window. Make sure that you have logged off successfully before leaving your computer.

(5)  The Mathematics Computing Laboratories

Familiarise yourself with Laboratories 705/6, 729/30 and 610. There is a printer in Lab 705/6.  The opening times and the booked tutorial times for each lab are posted on the doors to the labs. Students are free to use any of the laboratories during open hours, when not booked for a class, and during booked times at the discretion of the tutor present. Labs are not available on weekends, or on public holidays when the building is closed.

(6)  A few precautions, thank you:-

·       Please do not eat, drink or smoke in the laboratories. For maintenance reasons, any such items brought into the labs should be kept in bags etc below desk level.

·       Never turn terminals off; and to preserve screen quality, avoid touching screens.

·       Please take care not to disturb any cabling on or below the benches.
