Travel

Many airlines fly to Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport. It is located in the suburb of Katunayake, 35 km (22 mi) north of Colombo. Taxis are available from airport to Colombo. Please enquire at airport counter. Please check with your travel agent for details.

According to the current information from Sri Lankan government sources, all foreign passport holders would require to obtain a visa prior to entry into Sri Lanka from 1st January 2012.

The visa prior to arrival will be implemented from 1st January 2012 and on 1st of October 2011, www.eta.gov.lk was launched. Hence please feel free to check this simple yet informative site for more details.

Customs

Languages:

Sinhalese, Tamil and English. Many people speak English.

Currency:

Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR or Rs). One US$ is approximately Rs110 (this may vary).

Banks:

Many banks (state and private) accept foregin currency (notes, trvellers cheques etc) to exchange into Sri Lankan Rupees. There are number of banks open for 24 hours just after exit gates (outside the custom clearing area) at Colombo airport.

General:

Many strangers may approach you for various information/help. Simply ignore them unless they are government/airport officials. Take a taxi from the airport counter/agent to get your destination/hotel.
