Title: Mathematics on the outside
Abstract: Key differences between academia and the "real world" are that outside academia, one has to adapt to the priorities of others - the clients - and barriers between areas of mathematics become irrelevant. The challenge is to solve problems using whatever tools are available or developing very specific solutions. A good solution is measured by very different metrics from those used in academia.

John got a BSc in statistics from Flinders University, and a PhD in time series from ANU in 1976. After working at the University of Western Australia for seven years, he left to work as a consultant for Siromath. He is currently the Managing Director of Data Analysis Australia, the largest statistical and mathematical consulting company in the country, which he founded in 1988. John is a Fellow and Chartered Statistician of the Royal Statistical Society, an Accredited Statistician of the Statistical Society of Australia and past President of both the Statistical Society of Australia's Western Australian branch and the Geostatistical Association of Australasia. In 2008 John received a Service Award from the Statistical Society of Australia for his contributions to the profession.
