Locally flat embeddings of 3-manifolds in \(S^4\)

Abstract

Every3-manifold embeds smoothly in 5-space, but the question of which embed smoothly in 4-space is quite delicate. The situation simplifies dramatically if we consider instead locally flat TOP embeddings. The main themes of this book are concentration on well-understood classes of 3-manifolds, study of the complementary regions, and use of 4-dimensional TOP surgery.
