Abstract:
The maximal finite subgroups of GL(n, Q) (for n>10) and Sp(2n, Q) and the
maximal finite quaternionic matrix groups have all been classified up to
some degree using very similar methods. We will give a short survey of
these methods and then discuss some shortcuts that can be  used to find
all finite supergroups that contain a given irreducible rational matrix
group.
