MaPSS: Mathematical Postgraduate Seminar Series: George Papadopoulos -- What is "mathematics education" and why should we care?

Dear All,

We are delighted to present the MaPSS Seminar topic of today; please see the abstract
below.

**From this Semester the Seminar will always run on Monday, at 5:00pm in 535A**

Following the talk, there will be pizza on offer.

Speaker: George Papadopoulos (Sydney University)

Title: What is "mathematics education" and why should we care?

Abstract: This talk will provide a brief introduction to the research field of
mathematics education, focussing somewhat on the tertiary level as it is most applicable
to members of our School. A selection of educational theories and frameworks will be
introduced in general and then applied to the context of mathematics. Finally, we will
discuss what motivates and emanates from academic research in tertiary mathematics
education, and why it may be beneficial (or even essential) to be on our individual
agendas and the School as a whole (with some interesting case studies presented).

Supervisors, please encourage your students to attend.

Thanks,
MaPSS Organizers
