MaPSS: Mathematical Postgraduate Seminar Series: Mark Greenaway -- Music: A Mathematical Offering

Dear All,

We are delighted to present the MaPSS Seminar topic of Monday 10/10; please see the
abstract below.

**This Semester the Seminar will always run on Monday, at 5:00pm in 535A**

Following the talk, there will be pizza on offer.

Speaker: Mark Greenaway (Sydney University)

Title: Music: A Mathematical Offering

Abstract: Since the time of the Ancient Greeks, much has been written about the relation
between mathematics and music: from harmony and number theory, to musical patterns and
group theory. We will provide an introduction to the real interplay between these two
ancient disciplines, using examples drawn from Dave Benson’s book, Music: A Mathematical
Offering. Time permitting, we will get thoroughly side-tracked on the topic of
mathematical modelling of tube amplifiers, and why they sound so good.

Supervisors, please encourage your students to attend.

Thanks,
MaPSS Organizers
