SUMS Meeting: Sun -- The Poincaré Conjecture

Hello everybody,

SUMS is returning to weekly talks after taking a break last week to run the 
Puzzle Hunt. Speaking of which, the Hunt was amazing! Easily our biggest 
event of the year so far. For those that entered teams, thank you so much 
for being a part of something that we really put a lot of time and effort 
into, it means a great deal to us to see so many participants (254 
teams!!!!).

With that being said, this week we have a interesting talk by another 
special speaker. Jonathan Sun has taken time off from working on his PhD at 
the University of Chicago, to talk about the Poincaré Conjecture. As you may 
well know, the Poincaré Conjecture is one of the Millenium Problems with a 
million dollar prize offered by the CLAY Institute for its proof (or 
disproof), much like the P=NP Problem of which there was a SUMS talk last 
semester, however in this case the Poincaré Conjecture has been solved! 

For those wondering, the Poincaré Conjecture states that every simply 
connected, closed 3-manifold is homeomorphic to the 3-sphere. Jonathan will 
explain what this actually means, talk about its history and background, as 
well as how it was proved, which is sure to provide for a fascinating talk.
