Sydney Dynamics Group: Bob Rink -- Aubry-Mather theory for twist maps and monotone recurrence relations

Dear All,

Next week, Friday March 13, Bob Rink (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) will give a talk in
Carslaw 175 at 4pm on

Title: Aubry-Mather theory for twist maps and monotone recurrence relations

Abstract:
In this talk I will try to provide an elementary introduction to Aubry-Mather
theory. Aubry-Mather theory can be described as a variational method for finding
quasi-periodic solutions of Hamiltonian twist maps and monotone recurrence relations.
We will start with reviewing elementary results on circle homeomorphisms and then move
on to more to more complicated problems. I will end with a theorem of Blaz Mramor and
myself on the non-existence of invariant quasi-periodic solutions (a so-called "converse
KAM theorem").

Hope to see you all there,
Lachlan
