SUMS: Long -- Introduction to Julia Sets and Their Dynamics

This week’s SUMS talk will be given by undergrad student David Long.  

Abstract: 

Julia sets are a fascinating family of fractals defined in the extended complex plane.
Julia sets arise from a study of the dynamics of complex numbers under the iteration of
meromorphic functions.  These dynamics can be used to define a fractal whose depth,
variety and beauty has made it popular among mathematicians and laypeople alike.  The
mathematician is especially privileged here, as they can appreciate not only the
aesthetic beauty of these fractals, but also the mathematical beauty that underlies
their construction and study.  This talk aims to introduce these objects and develop
tools for their study, and hopefully in doing so give an impression of both these
aspects of their nature.
