Mathematical Biology Discussion Group - Grandmothering and Natural Selection

The next mathematical biology discussion group will be held this Thursday (the 6th of
October) at 2pm in Carslaw room 707A.  

This week Dr Peter Kim from the School of Mathematics and Statistics will be discussing
the potential role played by grandmothering in natural selection via the grandmother
hypothesis.  The grandmother hypothesis is that females who are nearing the end of their
reproductive life can more effectively increase their inclusive fitness by helping their
grandchildren rather than continuing to try to raise their own children.  This could
explain how humans have evolved increased longevity compared to other primates.
