Applied Maths Seminar: Terman -- A mathematical model for Parkinsonian rhythms

I will describe a model for neuronal activity patterns within the basal ganglia, a group
of neurons deep inside the brain that is involved in the generation of movements.
Dysfunction of the basal ganglia leads to movement disorders such as Parkinson’s
disease. Experiments have demonstrated that there is a change in firing patterns
between normal and pathological conditions and we present a model that is able to
generate these types of firing patterns. I will also describe a model for mechanisms
underlying the beneficial affects of deep brain stimulation, a therapeutic procedure
used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
