The main aims here are to tell you:-
(1)
how to log on to the computer called 'zeno';
(2)
how to get course messages on the computer;
(3)
how to start the tutorials for this course;
(4)
how to log off.
Please proceed through the steps below. First logins may be problematic, so don't hesitate to ask the tutor for
help.
(1) Logging on to zeno
(a) Find the [Caps
Lock], [Scroll Lock] and [Num Lock] keys on your keyboard. Pressing each of
these keys will toggle on and off a small light, either on the key or
elsewhere. Make sure all these lights are off, otherwise the login process may
not complete successfully.
(b) On the initial
screen you should simply see a "Welcome to zeno" login panel,
prompting you for a username and password. Proceed as below. Otherwise seek help
from your tutor.
(c) Enter your
username and password as indicated below:
Please enter your username: Your username is the same as your UniKey
login name. At the zeno login prompt just type your username in lower case and
press [RETURN].
Please enter your password: Type your UniKey password and press [RETURN].
(2) Course Webpage and Messages
After logging on correctly you will see the desktop. Open the course
webpage by pressing the [F1]
button or by right-clicking on the desktop, and selecting (left-clicking) the
browser 'firefox'. Follow the links to the MATH3076 or
MATH3976 webpages and then the Messages page. Read any unread messages. Course
messages carry important information such as weekly schedules, hints and
corrections to exercises, due dates for assignments etc. In particular the course
messages will show the schedule for week 2 (of semester) and following weeks. Please read the Week 2 schedule before
proceeding.
(3) Fortran Tutorials
Open an 'Xterm'
window or a 'Gnome terminal' window
by pressing the [F1] button or right clicking on the desktop and selecting 'xterm' or 'gnome terminal'. An 'Xterm'
or 'Gnome terminal' window
showing
a unix $ prompt will appear. To start the Fortran tutorials simply enter the
command
fortuts &
at the Unix $ prompt. Follow the schedule and other instructions in the course
messages.
(4) Logging off
You should log-off at the
end of a session, otherwise the next person who uses your computer may access
and possibly corrupt your files. To log-off press the [F1] button or right-click on the desktop
and select 'logout'. Wait for the
logout process to start before leaving.
(5) The Mathematics Computing Laboratories
Familiarise yourself with
Laboratories 705/6, 729/30 and 610. There is a printer in Lab 705/6. The
opening times and the booked tutorial times for each lab are posted on the
doors to the labs. Students are free to use any of the laboratories during
open hours, when not booked for a class, and during booked times at the
discretion of the tutor present. Labs are not available on weekends, or on public
holidays when the building is closed.
(6) A few precautions, thank you:-
· Please do not
eat, drink or smoke in the laboratories. For maintenance reasons, any such
items brought into the labs should be kept in bags etc below desk level.
· Never turn terminals
off; and to preserve screen quality, avoid touching screens.
· Please take care
not to disturb any cabling on or below the benches.
· Reminder: before
eating, etc after using the labs, please wash your hands.
