    Teaching Introductory Financial Mathematics

    Wednesday, July 19th, 2-3pm, Carslaw 173.

As the global finance industry continues to expand and evolve, its demand for suitably skilled graduates is unlikely to abate in the near future. Many tertiary institutions have moved to take advantage of this boom, as well as professional organisations like the Securities Institute of Australia. The derivatives industry is growing especially fast, and requires large numbers of graduates with sound mathematical skills.

Increasing numbers of our students are expressing interest in careers in the financial sector. One year ago I started teaching a new second year course on introductory Financial Mathematics, whch included a simulated trading exercise as part of the formal assessment. I will summarise what I learnt from teaching this course, and demonstrate one way in which the Web can be used as an interactive teaching aid.
