Bees, brains and beaches: modelling social insect colonies

    Wednesday, September 6th, 2-3pm, Carslaw 173.

What is the best way to think about a colony of ants, bees or termites? Is it like a fluid? Or a neural network? Or an ecosystem? Or a semiconductor or what? It turns out that the answer depends on what phenomenon you want to model and what time and length scales you are interested in.

In this seminar I present an intellectually undemanding tour through mathematical modelling of social insects including work being done at Sydney University and elsewhere.
