    The Wedge Entry Problem

    Wednesday, October 31st, 2-3pm, Carslaw 275.

The talk will discuss a classical problem in fluid mechanics, the question of what happens when a solid wedge enters a horizontal bath of water. The problem has applications in the phenomenon known as "ship slamming".

The talk will describe the modelling of the problem, and also (without much technical detail) the ideas in classical and modern analysis that can be used to solve it. The talk should be accessible to a fairly wide audience.
