Applications of Industrial Mathematics at BHP Steel

    Wednesday, April 10th, 2-3pm, Carslaw 173.

An overview of the industrial methods of steel making will be given together with the "downstream" processes used to make coated steel strip. Particular attention will be given to the mechanics of steel strip rolling for thickness reduction. As high roll pressures are needed for the plastic deformation of the steel the elastic flattening of the rolls must also be taken into account to predict the correct thickness reduction for a given roll force. Modelling of the process leads to a set of coupled integral and differential equations. Typical solutions will be given and solution techniques suitable for various "on-line" industrial applications will be discussed.
