Giving Lucy Cancer - Mathematical Modeling of Cancer morphology

    Wednesday, November 5th, 2-3pm, Carslaw 173.

In association with colleagues from CSIRO and a graduate Student Dr Huong Nguyen (Advanced Trainee in General Surgery at Nepean Hospital) we have been attempting to develop a project in mathematical modeling of cancer (specifically Colorectal Cancer) development. It is hoped that this model may serve two principal functions. First to enable the placement of a virtual cancer in a virtual female pelvis (Lucy SUMMIT group Stanford U) to enable simulated surgical training. Second to develop a model that can accurately demonstrate morphologically the progression of Colorectal cancer from polyp to early and then invasive cancer so as to explore changes in the rules (DNA) and their effect on growth and development of Cancer. The rationale underlying this approach will be outlined.
