A quantitative approach to vaccine development for HIV

Wednesday 10th August 14:05-14:55pm, Carslaw Building Room 373.

A number of vaccines for HIV are currently being developed and tested in monkeys. In collaboration with experimentalists carrying out this work, we have applied statistical analysis and ODE modelling to understand the kinetics of the immune response, as well as the impact of immune response on infection. In addition, we have developed epidemiological models to predict the impact of vaccination on the outcome of the epidemic. This analysis reveals significant limitations in the ability of vaccines to control virus. However, epidemiological modelling suggests that even partially effective vaccines may help control the epidemic.
