PDE Seminar

Potential Problems in Geomagnetism

Ivers

David Ivers

Mon 30 April 2012 2-3pm, Carslaw Room 829 (AGR)

Abstract

The Earth’s main magnetic field for many applications is well-modelled by a harmonic potential field outside the Earth’s liquid electrically-conducting core. Surface, airborne and satellite magnetic measurements of the present-day field, and archaeomagnetic and palaeomagnetic measurements of the past field lead to interesting potential boundary-value problems with non-standard boundary conditions and associated data analysis problems. I will give a general overview.
