Motives associated to classical modular forms

This talk will be an introduction to Francis Brown's proposal for constructing a tannakian category of mixed motives associated to classical modular forms. Much of the talk will be devoted to background material on tannakian categories, mixed Tate motives and what we know about them, and to the Galois theory of periods. Some of of the talk will touch on joint projects with Makoto Matsumoto and with Francis Brown.
