A combinatorial characterization of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract

A local model is a triangulation of the 3-ball together with a marked 0-cell called the center of the model. There are finitely many local models such that a closed 3-manifold is hyperbolic if and only if it has a triangulation such that every 0-cell has a simplicial neighborhood that is one of the local models.
