Missed exams and impaired exam performance

The information in this page applies to all students who miss an examination in Mathematics or Statistics, or whose performance in such an exam is impaired.

This page is usually updated early in the pre-examination study period. Currently it contains information for 2nd semester 2012.

Please read the information below carefully.

Information for students who miss an exam

If you miss an exam due to misreading the timetable, go to the Mathematics Student Services Office (Carlaw Room 520) immediately.

  • If serious illness or misadventure makes it impossible for you to attend an exam then you are entitled to apply for special consideration. Any application for special consideration must be lodged at the Faculty of Science Office, and submitted to the Mathematics Student Services Office (Carslaw 520), within five working days of the missed exam. (If you are physically unable to meet this deadline, please see Section 5.2.8 of the Faculty of Science policy.)
  • If you are unable to attend an exam due to an essential community commitment (as defined in the policy) then you may apply for special arrangements to be made. Any application for special arrangements must be lodged at the Faculty of Science Office, and submitted to the Mathematics Student Services Office (Carslaw 520), at least seven days BEFORE the date of the exam.
  • If you are unable to attend an exam on a Saturday due to religious beliefs or sporting commitments, please go to the Student Centre (Level 3, Jane Foss Russell Building) well before the date of the exam.
  • Please note that the Faculty of Science Special Consideration and Special Arrangement Policies apply to all mathematics and statistics units regardless of the faculty in which you are enrolled. Before applying for special consideration or special arrangements you must read these policies; they can be found at

    Application forms can be downloaded from this same page.

  • Please do not assume that you will automatically be granted further assessment if you miss an exam. Your application will be assessed in the light of your performance throughout the semester, and your academic record. Note that you will not be granted further assessment in a unit of study if you have participated only minimally throughout the semester.
  • Students who have been granted further assessment will receive notification from the Science Faculty, and a result of INC. In most cases further assessment will be in the form of a supplementary exam. Lists of students who have been granted further assessment will be posted on the School's website:
    http://www.maths.usyd.edu.au/u/UG/JM/ for junior level units;
    http://www.maths.usyd.edu.au/u/UG/IM/ for intermediate level units;

  • All further assessment for 2nd semester 2012 will take place on
    Tuesday 11 December 2012.

  • Please note that there will be no opportunity for further assessment after Tuesday 11 December 2012.
