Computing with the sporadic simple groups
In this talk I will describe the surprising influence that the discovery and study of the sporadic simple groups had on developments in computational group theory. After surveying this intriguing story, which spans over 50 years, I will discuss some recent work computing in the Monster, the largest sporadic group. The latter is joint work with Heiko Dietrich, Anthony Pisani and Tomasz Popiel.
