Refined Symmetries

Traditionally, we are used to the idea that the symmetries of an object form a group. More recently, for instance in the context of string theory, we encounter a refinement of the notion of group, where the symmetries are related by symmetries of their own. I will introduce these so-called 2-groups (a.k.a. categorical groups) and discuss some examples.
